Making the Constitution Easier to Reach
A public constitution should also be easy to access. Tiriig turned Somaliland’s constitution into a free mobile experience that works offline and is available in Somali and English.
The Constitution of the Republic of Somaliland is a public document, but accessing it has not always been simple. Printed copies are not readily available to everyone, while digital documents can be difficult to use on ordinary phones or in places with unreliable internet access.
In 2020, Tiriig developed the Somaliland Constitution app to make the document easier for people to access and use.
The app provides the constitution in Somali and English, allows users to search for specific articles, and stores the content directly on the device so it can be used without an internet connection.
What started as a simple civic technology project has now reached more than 40,000 people, with around 3,000 people continuing to use the app each month. Tiriig continues to maintain the platform and keep it available to the public.
The project reflects a simple part of our social-enterprise approach: some technology is worth building because it makes important information easier for people to reach, even when the product itself is not designed to generate revenue.
